"Hymn for Planet Earth" by Steven Verhelst, Featuring George Curran on Bass Trombone

In honor of World Nature Conservation Day, The United States Air Force Band is proud to present Steven Verhelst’s “Hymn for Planet Earth” performed by New York Philharmonic bass trombonist, George Curran.

George Curran became the Bass Trombone of the New York Philharmonic in June 2013 after serving in that role on an acting basis with the Orchestra during the 2012–13 season. Previously, he was a member of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra for six years and a fellow with the New World Symphony. He has also performed with The Metropolitan Opera, Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra, and the San Francisco Symphony, Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, and Detroit Symphony Orchestra.

World Nature Conservation Day emphasizes the importance of preserving a healthy environment and our planet’s natural resources for future generations. Along those lines, composer Steven Verhelst comments, “With a heartwarming melody, the bass trombone sets the color of our daily spot in the universe. A lyrical theme describes the beauty of our home. A place that breathes, lives but also suffers… But it is the stunning character of planet earth that survives. Nature and humanity going together.”
