Why Lord Shiva Has Moon On His Head.

Story of how Moon God got a permanent place on Lord Shiva's Head.
King Prajapathi Daksha had total 62 daughters ( according to Matsya purana), and he married his 27 daughters to Chandra (moon ), as per the Hindu Mythology, it is Daksha's 27 daughters which are the 27 Nakshatras in the Vedic Astrology and the MOON spends approximately one day each in one constellation(Nakshatra) and thus a Lunar Month(based on Moon) is of around 27 days which is equal to the number of Nakshatras.
But, moon out of his 27 wives, loved only Rohini and neglected the other 26 wives.
Not able to bear their husband's biased love , the 26 sisters approach their Father Daksha and complain about Moon.
Daksha gets furious over Moon and he curses moon to fade away for ever ( waning of moon).
Daksha’s curse starts to work and slowly Moon starts to feel the pain and gradually starts to fade !
Then , Sage Narada approaches moon and tells, “ Hey Moon, there is only one God, who can save you from Daksha’s curse . It is none other than Shiva, the Mahadev “.
Moon says “ why would Shiva ever save me ?? Daksha is Shiva's devotee, and Shiva already promised to Daksha , that He would never interfere in Daksha’s works , and all Daksha’s boons and curses will work and shall never be rolled back ! “.
Narada says , “ what you are telling is right Chandra. So, I would give you an idea. You first approach Shiva , and get Shiva's promise for your protection, and later tell about Daksha’s curse! “.
Moon does the same , as directed by Sage Narada.
Grief stricken, Moon God prayed to the Jyotirlinga of Lord Shiva for many years at Somnath. Pleased with Moon' s penance, Lord Shiva appeared in front of him. Seeing Shiva, Moon falls on his feet and says; Hey Mahadev, please protect me, I would not get up from your feet, until you promise to protect me.
Mahadev says “ oh Moon , I give my word ! I shall protect you ! “.
Then Moon gets up and thanks Mahadev , and then he tells the entire episode to Shiva. After hearing the full story of Daksha’s curse , Shiva becomes puzzled, not knowing what to do !!
When Daksha comes to know through Narada, about Moon's protection by Shiva. He immediately goes to mount Khailash.
Daksha fumes at Shiva and says “ Hey Shiva, why are you doing this? ? I have cursed Moon, and why are you protecting him ?? You already gave your word that , you would never interfere in my Prajapathi’s works !! Hand over Moon to me right now !”.
Shiva says “ I know Moon has done a mistake , by loving only his one wife and neglecting his other wives , he has breached Husband's dharma !”. But Daksha , if moon fades away, the entire world has to suffer in Moon's absence. So, please roll back your curse for the world's welfare “!.
Daksha fumes at Shiva and says ,” it's impossible, Moon has to fade away.”.
Thus , battle of words starts to heat up, between Shiva and Daksha.
Then, Lord Vishnu comes and intervenes into the situation and says , “ Hey mahadev and Daksha , please don't fight regarding this issue. I have an idea, please listen to me .. With my powers , I will divide Moon into two equal halves , one half will be protected by Shiva and the other half , will bear Daksha’s curse and will slowly fade away and again regain His full form. When moon will fade away fully, it would be called no moon day (amavasya) and slowly he will start to grow to full size , this would be called the full moon day ( Purnima). Thus, these will be called as Krishna paksha amd Shukla Paksha ( one month will be divided into two halves ).
Shiva and Daksha agree to this proposal of Lord Vishnu, and thus Shiva gave a permanent place to one half of the moon ( baby moon / crescent moon ) in his hair, and thus became Chandrashekhara !
Regaining his brilliance, the Moon God erected the temple dedicated to Lord SHIVA at Somnath, the first amongst the Dwadash Jyotirlinga Shrines of India.
