🌼The Suzhou Grand Canal, like the Great Wall, is one of China’s most magnificent and astounding creations. Approximately 1,200 miles (1,776 km) from tip-to-tip, the Grand Canal is the longest man-made waterway in the world. Officially known as the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal, its route runs from Beijing in the north to Hangzhou in the south, connecting to various river systems along the way.

The origins of the Grand Canal can be traced as far back as 495 B.C., making it more than 2,000 years old. With fifty-eight historically significant sites along its route, the entire Grand Canal has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. From ancient dynasties to the present day, the Grand Canal continues to bolster Suzhou’s economy and industry, quite literally putting Suzhou on the map.

🌼Known as the first street of Suzhou and dating back to 825 AD, Shantang Old Street has retained its original layout for 1,200 years and features typical Suzhou-style houses with whitewashed walls and black tiles. The buildings are situated on the banks of an ancient canal, where you can see traditional wooden boats meander beneath arched stone bridges, the most famous of which is the scenic Tonggui Bridge. The street and its buildings have been restored but retain their historic charm.

🌼Guanqian Street is located in the city center of Suzhou with a length of 760 meters from east to west, covering an area of 0.52 square kilometers. The street itself is several hundred metres long, but the Guanqian Jie shopping area actually extends far beyond the street itself. The street can be divided into three sections: east section, middle section and the west section. The eastern part is filled with historical ancient buildings. The middle is mainly the temples.
