A Senior Research Scientist with the Savanna Agricultural Research Institute (SARI) Dr. Nicholas Denwar has underscored the need to develop new varieties of soybean for commercial farmers in Northern Ghana under Pan-African Soybean Variety Trails project.

According to the soya bean breeding expert, the current varieties increase post harvest losses and does not encourage large scale cultivation of soya beans. Our Northern regional Correspondent Noah nash filed this report.

Soybean is mostly grown in the northern ghana as a cash crop and mostly cultivated by smallholder farmers especially women. Soya bean experts believe the country has a huge potential for soybean processing and export if post harvest losses are minimised.

In a bit to improve the cultivation of Soybeans in Ghana using improved variety, the Pan-African Soybean variety Trail program was introduced in Northern Ghana to enhance the breeding of new local varieties using high yielding varieties within Africa. The unique breeding technique has propel the commercial agenda as well as addressing the concerns raised by commercial farmers in Northern Ghana.

A Soybeans Breeder with the CSIR-SARI Dr. Nicholas Denwar in an interview with GHOne News underscored the need for a new variety for commercial farmers to minimised the post harvest losses as well as maximum gain from farmers investments.
