In this video Heimler takes you through Unit 7 Topic 5 of the AP U.S. History curriculum which is set in period 7 (1898-1945).

When World War I erupted on the European continent after the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand, America initially remained neutral under the leadership of Woodrow Wilson. However, there was increasing pressure for the United States to enter the war owing to the sinking of the Lusitania, German unrestricted submarine warfare, and the Zimmerman Telegram.

Once the United States entered, Wilson made it clear that his goal was to make the world safe for democracy. The American Expeditionary Forces played a limited role in combat, but even so, American entry decisively tipped the balance in favor of the Allied Powers. The war ended with the signing of the Treaty of Versailles, and though the League of Nations was one of Wilson's most precious provisions, the U.S. Congress didn't ratify it.
