INFO
The year was 1984 when an English duo released another Christmas song... A song that has never ceased to be relevant. Even 40 years after its release.

The story of "Last Christmas" surprisingly began not around Christmas but during the summer of 1984 (especially in early August). Some rumors say that it happened one year before, however, the important fact is that the song was carefully planned months in advance.  George Michael and Andrew Ridgeley, the duo behind Wham!, were riding the wave of their international success. It was during a visit to Michael's childhood home in Bushey, Hertfordshire, that inspiration struck. According to Ridgeley, Michael retreated to his old bedroom for an hour and emerged with the melody and lyrics for what would become "Last Christmas."

Recorded at Advision Studios in London, the track was a testament to George Michael's multifaceted talent. He wrote, produced, and performed the song almost entirely by himself, playing all the instruments and even layering his own vocals for a fuller sound. The recording process captured the warmth and nostalgia that would make the song an enduring classic.

At the heart of the track's production were the synthesizers and drum machines that defined 80s music. The Roland Juno-60 synthesizer provided the lush pads and shimmering arpeggios that set the song's mood. Meanwhile, the LinnDrum, one of the most iconic drum machines of the era, delivered the crisp beats that punctuated the track.  We can't forget the extended version with the iconic Yamaha DX7's FM jazz guitar sound in the intro. In addition, the Bass guitar and the Christmas sleight play with that sensation that we can only fell in the Holidays.

Combined with Michael's heartfelt lyrics about love and heartbreak, these instruments created a song that resonated deeply with listeners.
From Taylor Swift to Ariana Grande, the song brought inspiration to great names in music history with new interpretations, proving that Wham!'s song stood relevant during the time.

HAPPY HOLIDAY!
