A playthrough of Hudson Soft's 1993 action-adventure game for the Nintendo Game Boy, Milon's Secret Castle.

Played on the Super Game Boy.

Milon's Secret Castle is a Game Boy port of Hudson's 1988 NES game that brings with it a few minor but impactful changes. It was brought to us by the folks at Make, the developer behind such games as    • Chip 'n Dale: Rescue Rangers 2 (NES) Playt...   and    • Super Adventure Island II (SNES) Playthrough  .

The graphics in the Game Boy port appear to have been lifted straight from the NES game. Nothing has been scaled down, so everything is clear, detailed, and looks good on the GB screen. The trade off is that the screen crunch is pretty harsh.

The GB version's music sounds much nicer than the NES's, and the soundtrack has been beefed up with a few new tunes that mesh well with the original ones. (If only you could turn off that annoying bubble sound!)

The room layouts are largely the same, but they've been slightly compressed. As a result, a few minor tweaks were made to enemy, block, and item placements.

The game now has a simple intro sequence, and the original text-based ending has been replaced with a fancy cutscene that's followed by a credit roll. (Link? Is that you?)

There's a new menu screen to let you track your progress outside of shops.

A password system has been introduced, so the game no longer has to be completed in a single play session.

The GB game runs at a lower framerate and slowdown is an ever-present companion, making the controls feel soupy.

The game is significantly easier than its NES counterpart. Bosses are less aggressive, Milon's bubbles can be upgraded to an auto-firing turbo spam shot, items are cheaper, and money respawns whenever you restart from a password.

I much prefer the NES game, but I imagine that the Game Boy version's updates would appeal to anyone who felt shut out by the original's stiff difficulty level.
