Army joins rescue operations for trapped workers in Assam coal mine

A rescue operation continued on Tuesday to save workers trapped in a flooded coal mine in Assam's Dima Hasao district. The incident occurred on Monday morning at the Assam Coal Quarry in Umrangso, where water levels inside the mine rose to approximately 100 feet. The rescue team, including divers and sappers, was preparing to enter the mine with necessary equipment to locate and retrieve the trapped workers. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that naval divers from Visakhapatnam had been requisitioned to assist in the mission. While quarry employees reported around 15 workers were inside the mine, authorities have not confirmed the exact number of trapped individuals. The situation is critical, with efforts underway to rescue nine laborers who are believed to be stuck.
