"As we do every year, we put the nativity scene into the tank. This is now a tradition in the aquarium at Madrid Zoo. This year however we haven't put in a new, original character but we do have a new turtle who we have had to hit with a PVC pole as she was being a bit of a pest"

"Sharks feed on squid, cod and herring which weigh about 200 grams (7 ounces) per piece. They don't see us as prey. We have to be careful, we have strict and rigorous safety procedures that we have to follow. We also practice what to do if someone is injured in the tank. Following the procedure the danger is controlled."

STORYLINE:

Divers swam in a shark filled tank at Madrid Zoo on Tuesday to prepare the annual nativity scene for visitors.

Three conservationists from the aquarium dived into the million litre salt water tank, to set up the nativity scene with figures of Jesus, Mary and Joseph as well as the three kings, shepherds and a guiding star.

The stunt is now in its tenth year and has become a tradition, according to the zoo's head of conservation, Javier Gonzalez Sanz said.

The figures are metallic covered in special paint which does not affect the composition of the water.

One diver had the special task of warding "Bubu" a 50 year old male turtle whose inquisitive nature kept the divers on their toes.

The tanks biggest resident is a bull shark capable of detecting a drop of blood in 115 litres of water.

Gonzalez Sanz said the divers were not exposed to any great risk since the sharks do not consider humans as prey. They mainly eat squid, cod and herring, he said.
