Boca Negra Canyon has approximately 100 petroglyphs which can be viewed within one hour of hiking. I believe you will see about 60 of these in this video. The canyon's three trails - including Mesa Point - the trail we hiked - offer a diverse view of the natural landscape. Mesa Point is the main trail.
By way of background, archaeologists have dated some carvings here as far back as 3,000 years. Age is determined by the darkness of the image, its context and its comparison to other works of the same age. It is estimated that about 90 percent of the Boca Negra canyon petroglyphs were created between 1300 AD and 1700 AD.
