Kyst means coast. The Norwegian coastline is enormously long compared to the landmasses, and it used to be the most essential way to travel and shipping goods. It was incredibly important to the people living here.
In this track, you can hear the excitement of those ready for adventure, the longing of those left behind, and the music in the halls of those waiting. You can listen to the lurs calling the returning ships, the cries to honor those that did not return, and also some sounds brought back from far, far away.
Some of you are wondering what instruments I used on this track, so here it is:
Drums / Percussion: Davul, darbuka, a frame drum, branch, sticks, bones, and a deer jaw.
Wind: Neverlur, skalmeie (Falsterbipe) and deer bone flute.
Styrings: Sutton Hoo lyre, Shetland gue, Tagelharpe.
Other instruments: Jaw harp, Bullroarer.
ABOUT THE ALBUM:
The title Ferd means “journey”, “travel”, and “to explore”. The album's primary focus is to honor those who traveled the world, thus expanding knowledge and facilitating cultural exchange.
Ferd started out as a collection of pieces initially composed for short movies, documentaries, and plays, performed on old Norse instruments. It soon evolved far beyond that. Reworked with the help of talented fellow Nordic musicians brought together to give life to Ferd, the songs unveil a great journey with a common focus, while still telling each their own stories. I invited visual artists to illustrate each song of the album, which you can find in the extensive booklet together with their corresponding stories.
