STORYLINE

Beijing's police, long used to displays of force, put the force on display on Sunday at their first-ever open house, allowing the public - and foreign journalists - rare access to China's fast growing law enforcement agency.

From SWAT teams to bomb disposal units, officers gave the public a first hand experience of what it's like to handle a rifle or put on heavy bomb-proof equipment.

Though some effort was put to showcasing Beijing's latest crime-fighting technology, such as tackling
internet crime, much of the open day was devoted to putting a human face to the Public Security Bureau.

Members of the 50-thousand-strong force said they hoped the event would build trust with citizens and improve their image, tarnished by perceptions of corruption and brutality.

The open house seemed to go down well with the thousands of visitors who gathered in droves around the martial arts demonstrations and displays of high-tech equipment.

China's People's Liberation Army has traditionally been in charge of tackling major domestic security threats.

The Tiananmen Square crackdown in 1989 often serves as a brutal reminder of the measures the PLA is willing to take in the face of a perceived threat against the state and the Communist Party.

However, some observers say that increased spending in military technology means China is looking to create a more sophisticated, hi-tech army with off-shore capabilities.

China has an estimated police force of one point six (M) million - a ratio of one officer for every thousand civilians.
