Coal Mining Towns With Dark Pasts: Johnston City, West Frankfort and Benton, Illinois 4K.

All three of these Illinois cities were boom towns in the 1920's due to the abundance of local coal mining jobs. The trio of cities were also sundown towns, with Benton being an extreme case. A sundown town is a down that until around the 1960's wouldn't allow people of color to be in their town after the sun goes down.
