In 2001, at the behest of Yosemite Fund President Bob Hansen, four photographers began working in Yosemite’s expansive wilderness in collaboration with and in support of the Yosemite Fund, which later became Yosemite Conservancy. A fifth joined the group in 2003.

In 2009, Yosemite Conservancy published First Light: Five Photographers Explore Yosemite’s Wilderness, featuring the artistic explorations, reminiscences and musings of the photographers over a five-year period (2001-2005).

First Light was just the first chapter of a long, productive journey and extraordinary creative partnership. Five photographers are now six.

September 2021 marked the 20th Anniversary of their first collaborative trip
into the Sierra Nevada wilderness. The nearly yearly trips continue to this day.

This is the story of how the journey began, as told by Karl Kroeber, one of the original four and the organizer of the trips.
