Tommy Chan, FRCSEd: Corneal dynamic and tomographic analysis in pre-refractive screening

Corneal ectasia is a rare but severe complication after refractive surgery. Preoperative undetected corneal abnormality is the most important factor leading to its happening. Scheimpflug-imaging based tomography obtained from the Pentacam® and corneal dynamic response analysis obtained from the Corvis® ST have demonstrated excellent diagnostic capability for clinical keratoconus. However, individual technique may be insufficient for differentiating subclinical keratoconus or corneal ectasia from normal cornea. A new combined tomographic biomechanical evaluation was developed aiming to enhance the detection of subclinical keratoconus in pre-refractive surgery screening. This can greatly enhance the safety of corneal refractive surgery.
