Drug trafficking gangs used to be vertically integrated, with a single boss overseeing production, transportation, and distribution. Now, trafficking is a fluid network of subcontractors and service providers.

The specialization and innovation are astounding. For example, "narco-submarines" are used to transport drugs underwater, and divers weld "parasitic" cocaine capsules onto the hulls of boats.

The result is a system that is more dangerous to the world and more difficult to dismantle.

Feistl uncovered the Cali cartel's European money laundering front using findings from Operation Cornerstone. He and his partner Daniel Van Ness, along with their boss Javier Peña eventually brought together the downfall of the Cali cartel by arresting Gilberto and Miguel Rodríguez Orejuela while they were negotiating their surrender agreement with the government.
