The day after Jimmy Wales launches "The Seven Rules of Trust", it’s worth revisiting his own record. In 2008, he edited Rachel Marsden’s Wikipedia page while they were dating — a clear conflict of interest. Disclosure came only after Valleywag exposed the relationship. Marsden later claimed Wales broke up with her via a Wikipedia announcement. He’s also joked about being Wikipedia’s “monarch,” while outlets like The New York Times have dubbed him its “benevolent dictator.” When the rule-maker bends the rules, trust becomes a branding exercise.

The Wikimedia Foundation, which oversees Wikipedia, raised $185 million in donations in 2022 alone, largely through emotionally charged banners urging users to “keep Wikipedia free.” Yet the platform’s editorial control remains concentrated in the hands of a few — with Co- founder Jimmy Wales at the top.
