Neonates experience multiple painful and stressful procedures while hospitalized in the NICU. Untreated pain can lead to negative consequences in short and long term. There are effective and safe analgesic strategies that can be implemented at the bedside, and clinicians and families should work together to offering comfort and pain relief for hospitalized babies.

Mariana is a neonatal nurse, a PhD, and is currently a research fellow at SickKids in Toronto. She is interested in neonatal pain and in ways of improving neonatal pain practices in the clinical setting.
