Stemming from a love of Art Deco, the owners of this Northcote home decided to embrace a lacework of intricately-laid bricks to forge a dream home unique to their family’s DNA.

Originally a compact two-bedroom 1940s WWI-era home, the old house was quite modest and really compact before the renovation, explains architect Sonia Sarangi. It didn’t even have a dining space!

Rather than seeing the compact size as a negative, the clients, a family of four, were inspired. They decided to build a smarter, more innovative home – rather than add square metres for the sake of it.
