Startups and seasoned business professionals are constantly looking for ways to improve their marketing return on investment. Here are questions each can ask themselves as they review 5 key areas: target, customer interaction and life cycle, nurturing and metrics.

Everyone naturally wants to improve their marketing performance. No matter whether they are startups or they've been in business for a long time.

Sometimes we get distracted by shiny objects by trying every new channel. And sometimes the old tactics just don't work as well as they used to.

Either way, here are five things to look at: your target audience, how you interact with them, where prospects are in your life cycle, your nurturing, sequence and tracking.

Look at your target audience. Is there more than just one? How could you expand what you know about them? Their behavior? Where do they hang out on social media?

Have you identified a group of 100 targets who could drastically change your sales? As customers who buy more or more often? As influencers who could recommend you? Either for free or as joint venture partners, or affiliates taking a percentage of sales?

Next, look at how you connect and develop your relationships with your prospects. How often do you post or email? How quickly do you respond to comments? Are you helpful? Do you provide valuable content? How often do you offer a call to action? How do you reward loyal customers and encourage larger, more frequent purchases? Do you ask for referrals?

Take a look at your customer life cycle. What actions do you take to engage and nurture them from subscriber to buyer to the next purchase and finally to champion? Where might you be dropping the ball?

Do you have a lead nurturing sequence of activities whether it's email, calls, or some combination of other activities? How often do you reach out? How consistent are you about reaching out? How many touches on average does it take you to get an order for instance? How far out does that plan go? It should really never end until someone opts out.

The timing just might not be right for them. Too many companies give up after just five touches.

Last but not least, how do you measure success? Do you pull statistics at least once a month to see engagement, sales and lead trends?
