Raised in Hong Kong, YUSUF MOHIDEEN had grown up amidst the bustling metropolis, surrounded by a culture that celebrated individualism, self-expression, and opportunities. However, beneath the surface, he carried his Tamil heritage, a culture rooted in collectivism and archaic community values. This constant dichotomy had shaped his identity, presenting him with a delicate balancing act between preserving his ancestral roots and embracing his Hong Kong identity.

Approaching the topic with a distinct lens, YUSUF sought to explore the intergenerational trauma experienced within their own personal context. His unique upbringing as a third-culture brown kid brought forth a multitude of challenges and complexities. Through his talk, he will dissect the neurological aspects of this trauma, drawing insights from the field of neuroscience. Yusuf Mohideen is currently pursuing an MSc in Neuroscience at City University of Hong Kong, and a Neuroscience and Psychology graduate from the University of Hong Kong. He is interested in the neurobiological effects of intergenerational trauma in racially marginalised communities. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
