Introduction to Fatigue: Stress-Life Method, S-N Curve

Here the concept of fatigue is introduced and described. A rotating-bending material test is described, and typical results for steel are shown. The fatigue stress - number of cycles (S-N) curve is used to establish a technique of predicting the number of stress cycles that stressed parts can withstand, even in situations when the only material data available is ultimate strength. An example problem is completed demonstrating the use of this method on a polished rotating shaft with an overhanging load (flywheel).
