Epictetus made fun of people who chased money and fame but neglected the cultivation of their character.

He wasn't against money, fame, or sexual relationships, but he said that these things come with a cost.

If, by pursuing these things, you lose focus on living a life based on your values, then you might want to abandon these things altogether.

And if society views you as a 'loser', let it be. It's better to be a loser and have inner freedom than to be a 'success' and mentally enslaved.
