The naming ceremony is traditionally known as Peyar suttu vizha and is performed as a religious ritual. This is performed in an traditional form on the 12th,16th, 21st or 27th day after birth of baby. Different regions and religions follow generic methods of conducting this ritual.

The occasion is graced by all the elders in the family and neighbourhood. The gathering starts at an auspicious time. Priests may be invited to chant the mantras. Here the elders in the village gather around, bless the baby and name her. The baby is then dressed and decorated with the gifts presented by the near and dear ones and put into a cradle.

The cradle is prepared with the mother's wedding saree. Everyone call out the baby's name in the ears which almost completes the ritual. The guests are then offered lunch or breakfast per the timing which marks the end of completion of the naming ceremony.
