The lore regarding Farron Keep is very interesting. Abyss Watchers were a band of elite knights who dedicated themselves to fighting against the spread of the Abyss, a dark and corrupting force.
However, over time, the Abyss Watchers themselves became corrupted by the very darkness they sought to eradicate. They became locked in a perpetual battle amongst themselves, with each member of the group succumbing to the Abyss within.
The Abyss Watchers' loyalty to their duty remained unwavering, even in their state of internal conflict. They continued their relentless fight against the Abyss, unaware of their own fall into madness.
There's a covenant in the area you can join, called the wolf blood covenant.
The Wolf Blood Covenant is led by the Watchdogs of Farron. The Watchdogs ensure that the warriors sleep in serenity, by taking the form of loyal spirits and hunting down those who would trespass the woods of Farron.
If you join the covenant of the wolf blood you will get a medallion depicting a crest of a wolf that symbolizes the pact with the Old Wolf of Farron which resides in a crumbling stone tower within the Farron Keep. The wolf sits atop a throne-like structure, appearing regal and wise.
And the lore mentions a knight who is tainted by the dark of the Abyss and master of the wolf's blood of Farron.
That wolf knight was the first Abyss Watcher.
If you've played the first Dark Souls, you will realize the first Abyss Watcher is Artorius himself and the Wolf of Farron is his loyal canine companion Sif, who was fiercely protective of Artorias and remained by his side throughout their endeavors.
You will also realize that the second phase of the fight is very similar to Artorius'.You can see at the start of the second phase all the blood from other watchers is accumulating in one watcher. It is said that the blood was spread among the abyss watchers, and their souls are one with the soul of the wolf blood master. So we may be fighting Artorius himself in the second phase.
The bond between Artorias and Sif is both heartfelt and tragic. Artorius was able to protect his ever-loyal companion from the Abyss before he loses his mind completely. Then Sif is encountered as a boss in Dark Souls, guarding Artorias' grave. Sif's loyalty extended even beyond Artorias' demise, as Sif now protects his fallen master's resting place.
