DRDO - Biodegradable Carry Bags | Dr. K Veerabrahmam, Scientist

In an attempt to curb the rising menace of single-use plastic, the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) joined hands with Ecolastic Private Limited to launch biodegradable packaging products, which are made from natural and plant-based food-grade materials.

These sustainable bags would be made available in two forms —soluble and insoluble. These bags would be biologically degraded in about three months without negatively impacting the environment.

According to ‪@DRDOL1VE‬ and Ecolastic Private Limited, conventional polyethylene bags made from petrochemicals are toxic to the environment and take years to degrade. In contrast, these bags would be offered as a 'sustainable, cost-effective and ocean-safe alternative' to such plastic products. The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has launched these eco-friendly biodegradable bags for laddus at Tirumala temple. DRDO Chairman Satish Reddy along with Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanam (TTD) Executive Officer Dr KS Jawahar Reddy and Additional EO AV Dharma Reddy inaugurated an exclusive sale counter at Tirumala. The DRDO Chairman said the Advance Systems Laboratory of DRDO in Hyderabad has been doing a lot of research and inventing ways to find the best environment-friendly replacement for hazardous plastic.
