Have you ever brought your computer to a friend's house for what you probably would
call a "LAN party", but you never really understood what that phrase meant? Well, lets find out.
A Local Area Network, aka "LAN", is a type of computer network that connect
together devices in one physical, limited location, such as a building, an office or a home,
typically via Wi-Fi or an Ethernet cable.

A router typically assigns an IP address to each device on the network and facilitates a shared
connection between all the connected devices.
This allows each device on the network to communicate with each other,
even if theyre not connected to the wider area network, also known as WAN.

Now, a router typically only have four LAN ports available, so what if you have a LAN party of 5 people?
That means the fifth person wont have LAN-access, right?
Then the common solution is to use what is called a network switch,
which essentially is a box consisting of many LAN ports.

The switch is connected to one of the router's LAN ports with a network cable,
and every computer connected to the switch will then also be connected to the router.
And of course since the average router have 4 LAN ports, you can easily connect 4 switches to a single router.
You can think of the switch as an electrical outlet extender, just for LAN ports.
Very simple yet very crucial aswell for local area networks to thrive.
you can find them in pretty much every datasenter and areas in general where you find many computers and servers

And suddenly you can go from fitting just 4 computers to a router, to be able to connect hundreds, and even thousands
of computers to the very same router.
So LAN networks, even though often limited to just one place and router,
can still have very many computers connected to it.

Overall, the principle of a local area network, is that the devices can communicate with each other
with the help of routers and switches and network cables, even without necessarily being connected to the wider area network.
