Wheel spacers get a really bad rap in the car world. The problem is most people use them improperly. They either get spacers that are way too wide or don't get hubcentric pieces. This means the diameter of the bore of the wheel spacers is the same as the factory wheel. This means the wheel will be perfectly aligned on the hub. As far as width, I wouldn't run wider than a 25mm spacer. Any time that I run spacers, I prefer to use upgraded extended studs to properly mount them.

For the Mini, I decided on a set 20mm spacers to properly fill the wheel wells out. I am also running longer wheel bolts, but plan to eventually run a set of ECS wheel studs. Installing these is a simple as removing the wheel and sandwiching the spacer in between the rotor and wheel. Make sure everything fits up smoothly onto the wheel and hub then torque it all down to factory spec. I haven't had any issues out of these super basic eBay spacers after months of driving, and they look great. If I could do it again, I would have probably gone with a 15mm spacer, but I will stick with the 20mm set for now.
