In honour of The Purcell School’s 60th anniversary in 2023, the School’s Composition Department launched a series of exciting and innovative projects, collectively titled PurcellComposers@60. This documentary focuses on two of these groundbreaking projects: 'SCRAWL' and 'simultaneoUS'.
'SCRAWL', a dynamic 10-minute piece described as 'musical graffiti', was written by Purcell's Head of Composition, Alison Cox, in collaboration with 60 alumni composers, then brought to life by a 60-strong orchestra of Purcell students. This exceptional composition stands as a unique musical collaboration in the School’s history.
'simultaneoUS' is another original work, composed by BBC Young Composer winner and alumna Maddy Chassar-Hesketh. Maddy’s piece is built upon musical fragments contributed by 100 schoolchildren, as well as fragments by renowned professional and student composers, including Judith Weir, Errollyn Wallen, Joseph Phibbs and Caroline Shaw, creating a work that truly bridges generations and experience.
Directed and produced by Thea Cole, co-founder of StartPoint TV, the documentary offers a glimpse into the creativity and talent of The Purcell School’s community. Featuring performances by The Purcell School Symphony Orchestra (2023) and conducted by Edward Longstaff, this film captures the spirit and artistry of 60 years of musical excellence.
