Dogs are not just companions or symbols of loyalty. In the esoteric record they serve as messengers, guides and sentinels between worlds. From Egypt’s Anubis to the Hecatian hounds and the spectral dogs of the crossroads, the Dog carries the function of the threshold guardian. It marks the divide between the visible and the invisible, between ordinary cognition and the hidden path that runs beneath it.

Kenneth Grant’s treatment of this symbolism in Nightside of Eden takes it further: the Dog is not simply the guardian of death, but of transference. It mediates the movement from the familiar realm into the Nightside, where the archetypes are inverted and the current runs in the opposite direction. This is why so many traditions place the Dog at gates, tombs, burial grounds or astral crossings, as the necessary intermediary for passage.

The stellar encoding is not accidental either. Sirius, the Dog Star, has always been linked to revelation, timing and calendrical resets. The Egyptians tied the Nile’s rising to its heliacal appearance, the Greeks wove it into omens, and later occultists treated it as a key to a “second current” emanating from beyond the ordinary zodiacal frame. The Dog becomes both terrestrial and stellar, both animal and cipher.

In folk traditions, the same figure appears in a more veiled form: black dogs at crossroads, ghostly hounds that announce the approach of something beyond the mundane, and canine familiars linked to witches and nocturnal rites. All of these retain the original function even when the myth has been downgraded - the Dog remains the one who sees and hears what the human cannot, and who stands where paths converge.

So in this part of the series we are looking at the Dog as the first of the animal powers on the path to the gods. The Dog does not carry you across; it signals that a crossing exists, and that there is a price for approaching it. This is Part One.
