In this video, I outline how I design Shakespeare lessons and units. Since I believe philosophically that teaching Shakespeare works best through performance strategies, I utilize a backward planning model to guide students through a process where they can learn the language, voice and performance strategies essential for not only understanding Shakespeare but performing it as well.

Each lesson contains a warm-up and/or skill building component in the beginning, then progresses to some sort of scene work covering the content of the play.

I like to think of my units in three phases. The first phase works to foster familiarity with the language. These upbeat activities like "15-Minute Plays." (   • Engage Students while Teaching Shakespeare...  ) and "Silly Sounds" (   • Silly Sounds:  Teaching Shakespeare Langua...  )show students that Shakespeare can be fun and accessible. Phase two activities work to further build text, voice and movement skills, and, in phase three, students rehearse then perform a scene from the play studied.
