The Express Samina was a passenger ferry that tragically sank on September 26, 2000, off the coast of Paros, a Greek island in the Aegean Sea. The ferry was en route from Piraeus (the port of Athens) to the islands of Ikaria, Samos, and Patmos. The disaster occurred when the ferry hit a group of rocks known as the Portes islets near Paros due to the crew's negligence and a series of errors.
The shipwreck resulted in the deaths of 82 passengers, with many others injured. The incident led to widespread criticism of Greek maritime safety standards and practices at the time, as it was revealed that the crew was not adequately monitoring the ship's course. Additionally, safety procedures were poorly executed, and many passengers struggled to access lifejackets or lifeboats.
