Why and how was Krishna’s Dwarka immersed In Water? On hearing Dwarka, a sacred and revered image comes in front of the eyes and that is of Lord Krishna. In present day Gujarat, there is Dwarka city which was settled by Lord Krishna about 5000 years ago. It was here that he had a huge palace and Harigraha and this is the place where the holy Dwarkadhish Temple is also situated. This is the reason that today it is a pilgrimage site for Krishna devotees from all over the country.
According to Adiyogi Shankaracharya, it is one of the four Dhams in the country. The Dwarkadhish temple was built in the 16th century. In the sanctum sanctorum of this temple, a quadrangular statue of Krishna ji is installed and here he is called by the name of Ranchodji.
In ancient times Dwarka had many tall walls around it and there were many gates in it, hence it is known as Dwarka. It is one of the oldest 7 cities in India and the remaining 6 include Mathura, Kashi, Haridwar, Avantika, Kanchi, and Ayodhya.
