Before the formation of Âu Lạc, ancient Vietnam was a land shaped by diverse cultures, tribes, and a long-standing tradition of community life. The earliest known period of Vietnamese civilization can be traced back to the Đông Sơn culture, which thrived between 700 BC and 100 AD. The people of the Đông Sơn were skilled artisans and farmers, known for their bronze casting techniques, especially the iconic Đông Sơn drums—beautifully decorated symbols of power, spirituality, and social cohesion.
The Red River Delta, located in the north of present-day Vietnam, was the cradle of early civilization in the region. It was here that the Văn Lang kingdom, ruled by the legendary Hùng Kings, took root. According to traditional accounts, the Hùng Kings were the descendants of Lạc Long Quân and Âu Cơ, the mythical ancestors of the Vietnamese people. This origin story played an important role in shaping the cultural identity of early Vietnamese society, reinforcing a sense of unity and shared heritage.
The kingdom of Văn Lang, under the Hùng Kings, was primarily an agrarian society that relied heavily on wet rice cultivation. The geography of the Red River Delta, with its fertile soil and network of rivers, provided ideal conditions for agriculture. Village communities, known as "làng," were central to social life, where people worked cooperatively to manage the irrigation systems that supported their livelihoods. This collective spirit laid the foundation for a culture that valued harmony, resilience, and mutual support.
