Like many, I have heard or read about Substack. I have collected and read the stories some Medium writers have published. Friends and family on Medium suggested that I give Substack a go. 


Substack is for developing a unique perspective. Medium encourages experimentation, Substack demands commitment.


The Substack platform offers a variety of creative outlets for writers who crave more than just writing. As you can see from my stories, I cover a range of topics!


Why I Decided To Make the Leap


1. Give a Voice To My Writing


Substack has a built in recorder, that allows you to read your writings and upload podcast content. I am able to use my previous commercial voice over work and bring my stories to life. 


I originally was using the Ableton software device to mix my vocals with music. I realized the Maono sound pad was much simpler for my purposes. The Maono has a nice flexible mic to use, along with ear phones. I have the ability to mix music into my podcast, without having to fine tune vocals. Ableton software is more for professional musicians.

I am in the process of learning my way around the audio selections, as you can play with pitch, base, treble and more. The trick is trying to level out the music in the into and conclusion.

I am know part of a professional podcast group, so there is no need to purchase additional equipment. You can copy your RSS Feed directly from Substack, into RSS, Spotify and more. I use the Maono at home for reading my writings and the footage from my weekly Veteran podcast comes directly from the studio!

2. Videography


I enjoy making mini videos of road trips, biking, skiing and more. I can basically upload my videos to Substack, add a intro with vocals and music.

3. News Letters 


News Letters are a plus with Substack. I created a monthly Wellness news letter. The letter is published each month, on the 3rd or 4th Wednesday. I decided to use Microsoft Sway, as my embedded platform. I am in the process of learning more about and experimenting with the newsletter. Most writers create their newsletter directly in the Substack platform. Right now having a link to Sway is easier for me. Substack is a phone based platform, created for writing on the go. The newsletters are easy to read from any phone.

4. Chat Rooms: Growth and Community


Substack allows you direct communication with your listeners and readers! You have the option to create chap rooms and engage with your readers more. You do have to be aware of some of the direct communications you receive, as it could be a fake account or AI account contacting you.


What’s Next?


I’ll continue my path on both Medium and Substack. Both have opened up new doors for me. I have been offered my own podcast show outside the Veteran’s Round Table and I look forward to publishing more content. The podcast series will be my main focus.
