1. Join airline email lists to receive their newsletters. We all hate junk mail, but these emails are not junk. They offer the best deals on a limited basis, so always be on the lookout to see what offers they have for you.

2. Book your ticket 47 days before a trip.
CheapAir ran the numbers on over five MILLION flights. According to their research, buying a domestic ticket 47 days prior to takeoff is the best way to score the cheapest fare.

3. Fly on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays.
Fridays and Sundays are the most popular days to fly. Nobody chooses to fly on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, or Saturdays because it means sacrificing extra vacation days. Flying midweek or Saturday, will save you money because airlines can't afford empty seats on flights. This means lower fares to encourage off-peak booking.

4. Fly off-peak hours as well.
Off-peak hours to fly are between 5am and 7am, or after 8pm.

5. Fly two different airlines.
Buying a one-way fare can be more cost effective. You can often choose better departure times or arrive and depart from different airports. A few online booking services mix and match flights, but they won’t show you all the available combinations. So be sure to check each airlines website.

Lastly, book by fare price, not by destination.
If you just want to get away, and you’re not set on a destination, Kayak has an explore feature that shows you flight costs, searchable by temperature, price, flight time, and activities, rather than by destination
