We’re nearly ready to #CaptureTheCosmos! Join the NSF–DOE Vera C. Rubin Observatory team on June 23, 2025 at 11am US EDT as they reveal the first incredible images from the world’s newest and most powerful survey telescope, equipped with the largest digital camera ever built.

Beginning later this year, Rubin will create the ultimate movie of the night sky, repeatedly scanning the sky for a decade to create an ultra-wide, ultra-high-definition, time-lapse record of our Universe across space and over time. The resulting dataset, called the Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST), will be the largest ever amassed for optical astronomy.

This enormous, all-purpose dataset will bring the night sky to life, enabling scientists around the world to better understand the nature of dark matter and dark energy, create an inventory of the Solar System, map the Milky Way, explore the dynamic sky, and more.

NSF–DOE Rubin Observatory is funded by the U.S. National Science Foundation and the U.S. Department of Energy, Office of Science. Once fully operational later in 2025, Rubin will be jointly operated by NSF NOIRLab, under a cooperative agreement with AURA, and DOE’s SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory.
