Q: I really enjoy that funky, jazzy, Motown rhythm guitar style but my ability with it is simply terrible. I was wondering if you could give me some tips on two levels... One, is how to play some really simple double-stop shapes that can help me to develop my rhythmic feel. And second, help me with some of the popular chords that make up a large part of this particular style. Thanks for your guitar lessons -- they're the best on the net!

A: The funky jazzy Motown style of guitar playing is an excellent platform for the practice of rhythm guitar. And, as you've likely noticed with the grooves, that I'm sure you've heard in many songs by artists like; The Commodores, Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, the Funk Brothers and many, many others. This style does contain - full chords, as well as partial chords, double-stop lines and even single-note melody. In this video lesson I've created a progression that we'll use as a back-drop for learning three rhythmic grooves. A single-note melody line, a double-stop riff, and a set of larger chords to develop as well.
