Established in 1969, the Department of Electronic & Telecommunication Engineering (ENTC) is unique in Sri Lanka, in offering a B.Sc. Engineering degree in this specialization.

The department has an annual intake of 100 undergraduate students; around 70 postgraduate students. Short-term courses are also conducted by the department for CPD of engineers and other technical personnel in the field.

Graduate level R&D activities are facilitated mainly through the postgraduate laboratory and 2 research laboratories (both of which are industrial collaborations). Moreover, the department is equipped with a telecommunication laboratory; digital electronics laboratory; analog electronics laboratory; optoelectronics laboratory; microwave laboratory, intelligent machines laboratory and a CAD laboratory that cater undergraduates as well. Computer laboratory supplements the activities by providing 24x7 access to computers; the Internet and the department intranet.

The senior academic staff is specialized in a wide range of fields: from electromagnetics to wireless communications; digital signal processing to VLSI design; medical & industrial electronics to tele-robotics; etc. The staff members are actively engaged in teaching as well as R&D activities.

The department conducts collaborative work with the industry in the areas of Telecommunications, Industrial Electronics and Computer Hardware. The services range from repair, calibration & measurement; specialized design & development to consultancy & training. The department is also a source of external resource personnel for the government, INGO and private institutions.

The programs conducted by the department are regularly revised to meet the changes in technology and the industry. Compulsory courses nurture the basics one needs to be conversant with, while a choice of career options is ensured through elective courses. Both theoretical and practical aspects of students' knowledge are focused during the lectures; lab sessions and June-term & final year projects. Placement as industrial trainees; industrial visits/ studies and seminars/mentoring programs are other means by which the students are given the industrial exposure.
