French President Emmanuel Macron hosted European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Council President António Costa in Paris for a series of high-level talks focused on European security, continued support for Ukraine, and preparations for an upcoming European Union leaders’ retreat.

The meetings, held privately at the Elysee Palace, were aimed at laying the groundwork for an informal EU summit scheduled for February 12, which will focus on boosting competitiveness and addressing the future of the EU single market. Former Italian Prime Ministers Mario Draghi and Enrico Letta are expected to take part in the retreat.

Discussions also covered defence concerns, European sovereignty, and long-term strategic priorities, as well as the war in Ukraine. The talks took place against a backdrop of renewed debate over potential European engagement with Russia, following reports of discreet diplomatic contacts involving French officials in Moscow.
