In this video, we explore the ability of AI models to write law school exams without human assistance. Professor Jonathon H. Choi of the University of Minnesota Law School used the widely-publicized AI model ChatGPT to generate answers on four real exams. The exams, which covered Constitutional Law, Employee Benefits, Taxation, and Torts, were then blindly graded as part of regular grading processes for each class. Over 95 multiple choice questions and 12 essay questions, ChatGPT achieved an average grade of C+, performing at the level of a low-but-passing student. The implications of these results for legal education and the practice of law are discussed in the video. The ChatGPT model is an AI language model produced by OpenAI and is known for its ability to predict the next word given a body of text. The study was conducted by 3 co-authors and the exams were formatted to match actual exams written by students. The AI-generated exams were then shuffled with actual student exams and graded blindly by the other three co-authors.
