Cab view of the Tokaido Line. From Tokyo Station to Yokohama Station.

The Tokaido Line is a major trunk line in Japan. In the late 1860s, the government at the time decided to build a railway in Japan. At that time, the first lines selected for construction were a trunk line between Tokyo and Yokohama, a trunk line connecting Tokyo and Kyoto, a branch line between Kyoto and Kobe, and a branch line to Tsuruga on the Sea of Japan.

Yokohama and Tsuruga had major ports, and it was considered essential to link railways and shipping. The trunk line connecting Tokyo and Kyoto was originally planned to cross the mountainous region of central Japan. However, when surveying began, it was predicted that construction would be difficult, so the trunk line was changed to via the Tokaido.

The Tokaido is a route that stretches from Tokyo via Yokohama along the Pacific Ocean, and reaches Kyoto via Nagoya. It has been a major road connecting the east and west of Japan since the Edo period. The railway connecting Tokyo and Yokohama (although the route is slightly different from the current one) opened in the fall of 1872. It was the first railway to open in Asia after India.

The current Tokyo Station opened in 1914, and the current Yokohama Station in 1928. Both stations were rebuilt from the old ones with convenience in mind. Tokyo Station was changed due to air raids during World War II, but was restored to its original appearance in 2012.

With the opening of the Shinkansen, the current Tokaido Line seems to have been transformed into a long local line. There is only one express train between Tokyo and Osaka, and this train is operated to connect Tokyo with the Shikoku and Sanin regions, and is not a train that is designed to connect Tokyo and Osaka.

Nevertheless, there are many parallel lines around Tokyo Station, such as the Yamanote Line, Keihin Tohoku Line, and Shinkansen, and many trains are running, making it feel lively.

In this video, we recorded the area from Tokyo Station to Yokohama Station. I would like to upload the parts from Yokohama Station onwards as parts 2 and 3. Photo taken in May 2024
