Trenet / Weissenberg: En Avril à Paris (In April in Paris)

This song has a secret past.

There was a mysterious record from the 1950s: Mr. Nobody Plays Trenet. It contained unusually creative and entertaining piano settings of six songs by the French singer-songwriter Charles Trenet (1913–2001).

But Mr. Nobody turned out to be Alexis Weissenberg—one of the great concert pianists of the 20th century.
Back then, playing popular music was almost unthinkable for a “serious” artist, so he hid behind a pseudonym, letting these playful, elegant transcriptions slip quietly into the world.

Decades later, Canadian pianist Marc-André Hamelin stumbled upon the recording. No sheet music existed, so he transcribed each note by ear, bringing them back to life.

I’ve always loved the charm in this piece—jazzy harmonies as light as spring air, but full of wit and improvisational virtuosity.
And finally… spring has arrived.
