Almost 26% of Netherlands is below sea level and 50 % is below 1m sea level. Netherlands has more than 100 kms of Canals only in Amsterdam. They were built in 17th century during their golden period to battle with water, Netherlands is at lowest point of whole Europe.
Dutch had East India and West India companies and they were rich merchants. They kept building beautiful and unqiue houses along the canals to show their financial and social status.
These canals were used for trade, irrigation and transport purpose.
