The worst starting hand in Texas hold 'em is "The Beer Hand", or "72 offsuit" or plain and simple "72o."... Which is exactly why I like to play it! You can say I'm a sucker for 72o. I play it as far as possible... I play it. Till the verge of suicide.

Heads-up, me and ”Epartacuss.” Hand # 12, ante 400, and blinds are 4,000/2,000. Just the 12th hand, and my stack is 109,130. Epartacuss has a stack of 10,070. No big deal bullying him. I just go all-in, he folds. I show him my 72o. No reaction. His stack is not 6,070.

I didn't know that 72 offsuit (72o) is the worst of poker hands... Until I did. It happened when I won a three-way all-in with "The Beer Hand", 72o (   • Kicking some serious butt with the worst p...  ). My 72o beat "High Five" (A5) and "Dogs" (K9) when I hit a 7 on the flop and got axes (77).

So, what's the deal with the worst hand?

72o is called "The Beer Hand" because:

-it's either time for a beer; (It always is...)
-if you win with this you need to get other players a beer; (But there's nobody left!)
-or only a person full of beer would play this hand (More likely than not I've been a beer-soaked boy)

The Beer Hand has the worst chance of winning of all possible pocket cards in a full table playing Texas Hold'em.

72o just is the statistically smallest hand of scoring anything with so few options. The thing is that, like, your odds of scoring 2222 is equal to your odds of scoring AAAA. But when we go to the other hands, the weakest is a straight. And with 72o you can't make a straight plus your chances of scoring a flush are but miniscule. This is, I guess, where 72s enters the picture. No chance for a straight, but the odds to score a flush are a bit better.

Another name for 72o (Oxford Dictionary poker parlance) is "Hammer". Because it is the worst, some players, including yours truly, play it for fun, or "hammer." You can try to hammer with it - dunnit - you can play it when hammered - been there!

In real life, however, there is no single "worst hand" in poker. The worst hand is the hand that causes you the most damage.
