In Greek mythology, Tethys was a Titan goddess of freshwater and the source of all the Earth's freshwater. She was the wife of the Titan Oceanus (the earth-encircling river of fresh water) and the mother of the Potamoi (river gods), the Oceanids (nymphs of springs, streams, and fountains), and the Nephelai (clouds).

Tethys was one of the Titans, the powerful deities who preceded the Olympian gods. She was specifically a goddess of freshwater, associated with the sources of all the earth's freshwater.

She was married to Oceanus, the Titan who personified the great river that encircled the world. Together, they were considered the source of all freshwater.

Tethys was the Greek goddess of freshwater who bore six thousand children to her husband Oceanus. Those children became the rulers of all rivers, streams, lakes, and rain clouds. She was also a devoted mentor and caretaker of Hera who would become Zeus's wife, and the grandmother of the popular goddess Athena.
