Each year we break down the hottest holiday gifts on everyone’s wish list. And tech gifts are always at the top of that list. But what many people don’t know is that some of that new technology also comes with an underlying threat – a risk of explosions and fires from Lithium-Ion batteries. Jennifer Williams with the Fire Safety Research Institute joins our Laura Cavanaugh to talk about these potential dangers and a new campaign to help consumers protect themselves.

We’re talking about batteries that power mobile phones, laptops, electric bikes, scooters and more. They have the potential to overheat and catch fire. And these types of fires have increased more than 20% every year since 2017.

“These fires are on the rise. We’re seeing them around the country happening almost daily causing injuries and fatalities,” said Williams. “Our research shows that a fire involving these devices could leave you with one minute or less to escape. So it’s a real critical time to take charge of battery safety.”

The Take C.H.A.R.G.E. Campaign is a reminder for consumers and families to take battery safety seriously. It’s also an acronym with each letter standing for a safety measure you can take.

C – Choose Certified Products.

H - Handle with care. Only use the charger that comes with the device.

A – Always stay alert for warning signs. If you have damage, heat, strange odors, stop using the device immediately.

R – Recycle battery-powered devices properly

G – Get out if there’s a fire

E – Educate others

Williams also advises to make sure that you have working smoke alarms inside your home and that you have practiced a fire escape plan.
