Thanks to the generosity of more than 500 individuals and organizations, the renovation of the 1814 Peale Museum building is complete, after many years of fundraising and grassroots work to save Baltimore’s (and the country’s) landmark museum building!

The exterior work to renovate the roof, windows, and brickwork was completed in 2019. The interior work began in earnest in 2020. Inside the historic walls, master craftspeople repaired plasterwork, flooring, and all woodwork.

The Peale in Baltimore was the first museum that was purposefully built in the United States. It was commissioned in 1813 by Rembrandt Peale, a member of the first family of American artists and museum pioneers. Through the Peale family’s explorations, scientific investigations, and museum displays, they also contributed greatly to the new nation’s understanding of science, technology, and natural history.
