The term specifically includes his daughter Fatimah, her husband Ali ibn Abi Talib (who was also Muhammad's cousin and close companion), and their two sons, Hasan and Hussein. These individuals are revered in Islam for their close association with the Prophet and their roles in shaping the religion.

The Ahlebait are highly esteemed by the Shia branch of Islam, who believe that they were chosen by God to guide the Muslim community after the Prophet's death.
