This project aims to collect and utilize the stories, or "narratives," of a person's life so that they can be identified and accepted as the unique person that they truly are. For example, even if someone has dementia, it would be a mistake to view them merely as someone who behaves oddly or is incapable of contributing. Every action they take has intention and purpose. To truly understand these actions, it's essential to acknowledge and consider narrative. We collect such narratives out in the real world of caregiving, at care site of Yamanami Kaiteki Seikatsu Co. Ltd. that is a collaborator of our joint research project.
We record the stories shared with us from the past, including details about locations and the scenery. From these stories, we learn which places, people, and things are significant to the individual. The collected data is organized by different eras in a person's life. As lifestyle habits and priorities evolve, organizing the information according to eras makes understanding the thoughts and behaviors influencing a person's actions easier. For example, even in the case of the elderly man who goes missing after leaving home, there is a specific reason behind his decision to go out. The memories of picking up his grandchildren from kindergarten and his feelings of caring for them, motivate him to leave the house. The traditional approach to elderly care often addresses symptoms and problematic behaviors as "challenges." However, there's a shift towards person-centered care that values individuality. The Narrative Project aims to start this new approach, focusing on meeting each person's unique needs.
What is important is to gather that person's life story and thoughts and to provide and share value from a person-centered care perspective. To do this, instead of relying solely on the typical assessment process, we collect and analyze subtle comments, expressions, and other details from daily life as reflections of the person's thoughts and information. By accumulating this and sharing it with the family, we believe that support will naturally shift toward helping the person live in a way that aligns with their wishes. (2025)
